Lawmakers in Baton Rouge, after much debate, are moving forward with classifying crawfish as a schedule one drug. Citing high prices, theft and the export of crawfish to other states, Attorney General Jeff Landry has asked his friends in the legislature to pass this controversial legislation.
Citing the drug schedule system, Landry believes now is the time to outlaw crawfish in order to stop crimes like theft or the recent incident involving black potatoes and no seasoning.
SCHEDULE 1 (CLASS I) DRUGS are illegal because they have high abuse potential, no medical use, and severe safety concerns; for example, narcotics such as Heroin, LSD, and cocaine. Marijuana is also included as a Class 1 drug despite it being legal in some states and it being used as a medicinal drug in some states.
If this legislation is passed, crawfish would be restricted to 3 pounds per person, per year - and only if prescribed by a doctor. Anyone caught possessing or consuming crawfish without a prescription could face up to 5 years in prison with quinoa gumbo.
Crawfish paraphernalia like boiling pots will also be banned, as they serve no other legitimate purpose, according to Landry. The ban would further cripple the Louisiana economy, which is a sacrifice the state GOP is willing to make.
Governor John Bel Edwards has not said whether or not he will sign the bill, if it makes it to his desk.
